Aired Friday nights during the summer of 1973.
This hour-long music program replaced the Tommy Hunter Show during the summer. Ronnie Prophet was the host of the show, which was designed to showcase new country music talent. Prophet went on to host Grand Old Country on CTV for five seasons.
Country Roads featured three segments that offered viewers some insight into the range of music commonly known as country. The New Song Spot offered new compositions; It’s Cryin Time Again featured hurtin’ songs and The Grease Spot offered up some good old rockabilly music.
The show also featured comedy, with Gwen Neighbours as Granny Slanders and two puppets created by John and Alison Vandergun, Harold the Frog and Yackie Duck. Musical regulars included The Peaches, the OK Chorale, Joey Tardiff and The Country Roads Brass featuring Dave Woods on trumpet. The show was produced by Bill Lynn in Toronto.
