On February 13th 2011, one of a list of new shows announced by the CBC as having been committed to for the 2011-2012 season was titled Cover Me Canada. The announcement gave no details of the content of the series, which would come from 11 Entertainment.

On June 8th, the CBC announced that Cover Me Canada would play on Sundays at 9 pm, launching on September 18th.The show was described as “a new elimination-style competition that gives audiences the chance to rediscover some of the best Canadian music of all time.”

The series planned to feature hitherto unkown  musicians and groups aged 12 and up, who would be invited to submit video performances of their cover versions of specified iconic Canadian songs.  The first four performances from which the apllicants were asked to choose one to  ‘cover’ were Sundown (Gordon Lightfoot), Run To You (Bryan Adams), Life is a Highway (Tom Cochrane) and Black Velvet (Alannah Myles).

Nicole Appleton was named as the host of the series. The judges were Jordan Knight, Deborah Cox and Ron Fair.  The winner would receive $100,000 and a recording contract.  The Executive Producer was Don Weiner.

Early in 2012, the CBC announced that because of budget cuts Cover Me Canada had been cancelled, and would not be returning in their Fall schedule.
