The CRTC having denied Global a licence for a Mystery Channel in 1996, this specialty cable channel was licensed to them in November 2000, with the title 13th Street, but when it launched in September 2001 the name had been changed back to simply The Mystery Channel. Originally majority owned by Global and TVA, with Rogers having a small minority holding (9.9%), Mystery was licensed to provide a program schedule of mystery and suspense programming, including movies, dramatic series, short films and documentaries. Global and TVA eventually acquired Rogers’ shares equally, with Global acting as managing partners in the venture.
Series announced for the fall of 2009 included Bones, House, Law and Order: Criminal Intent and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
In January 2012 TVA announced that it had applied to the CRTC for approval of the sale of its 50% interest in the “Mystery TV” specialty channel and its 51% interest in “The Cave” specialty channel to Shaw Media.
The proposed transaction was finalized in the spring of 2012. In May 2014, Shaw rebranded the channel as Crime + Investigation.
On April 1, 2016, Shaw Media was acquired by Corus Entertainment.
