Denny’s Sho

Network: CBC Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1978

Broadcast Medium: Television

Aired Thursday nights during the summer of 1978.
Denny Doherty was the star of this summer music/variety show produced in Halifax. While Denny’s major claim to musical fame was as a member of the Mamas and Papas, he also had a keen interest in Canadian folk music.
This show offered the best of both worlds: contemporary pop with a little Cape Breton fiddle music on the side. Guests included Ken Tobias, Murray McLauchlan, Salome Bey, the Original Caste, Tom Gallant, Moe Koffman, Gloria Kaye, Ryan’s Fancy and Denny’s father, who was the house band’s tuba player.
Key ingredients in the show’s highlights were appearances by Doherty’s contemporaries in North American folk-rock, including John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky of the Lovin’ Spoonful, and the first public reunion of the surviving members of the Mamas and the Papas: Doherty, John Phillips, [who died in 2001] and Michelle Phillips. Cass Elliot had died in 1972.
