Licensed in 2000 to Stornoway Communications as the Issues Channel, what came to be called the Ichannel was launched in September 2001, and was to be dedicated to public affairs programming. The CRTC decision said the channel would provide context for the discussion of matters of public interest, and would be the only channel in Canada to focus entirely on the exhibition, discussion and debate on the public issues facing Canadians. The schedule later expanded to include films and documentaries on social issues, and investigative reports on international as well as domestic matters.
On August 15, 2016, iChannel is shutting down operations and will no longer be available to any TV providers in Canada.
