Grieg, Arthur W. (1896-1983)
Arthur Grieg was a pioneer in Canadian radio and was believed to be the first person to hang out his shingle as a “Technical consultant”.
He was the Chief Engineer of CHNS-AM/CHNX short-wave from 1936 to 1956. He had served with the Royal Canadian Artillery in WW I, and was involved in communications. He was a self-taught engineer – a quiet man, according to his friends, who never sought the spotlight.
Having been the licensee of an amateur short-wave station, he was qualified to build the transmitter used by CHNS for short-wave transmission of its AM programs, using the call sign CHNX. As an amateur, Art was said to have made the first voice-contact between North America and Europe.
Art also taught electronics and radio to night classes at the Technical College (vocational school) in Halifax.
In 1986, Arthur Grieg was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame.
