Stations of Northern Broadcasting & Publishing Co. of Timmins were granted licenses to operate FM stations. All would have a power of 250 watts: CHNB North Bay (CFCH-AM), CHKL Kirkland Lake (CJKL-AM), CKRT Timmins (CKGB-AM) and CKEX Peterborough (CHEX-AM). CHNB and CHKL would use RCA equipment. CKRT and CKEX would use GE equipment. The company’s CKWS in Kingston already had an FM counterpart. Later in the year, Northern received three FM licences – Timmins, North Bay and Kirkland Lake. The call letters were CFKL-FM for Kirkland Lake. The station would eventually go on the air – as CJKL-FM.

1948

CJKL-FM went on the air August 11. It simulcast the programs of CJKL-AM. It did not use the CHKL call sign that was mentioned in 1947. CJKL-FM operated with a power of 250 watts on a frequency of 93.7 MHz. CJKL-AM had been on the air since 1933. Originally licensed to O.J. Thorpe, mayor of Kirkland Lake, it was sold a short time later to Roy H. Thomson’s Northern Broadcasting and Publishing Ltd.

CJKL-FM used an RCA transmitter.

1950-51

Approval was given to transfer 1,530 shares of Northern Broadcasting Co. Ltd. (CFCH, CJKL and CKGB) with no change of control.

1956

CJKL-FM left the air around this time. In 1999, CJKL-AM moved to the FM dial and assumed the name of CJKL-FM.
