1960

Soo Line Broadcasting Co. Ltd. applied for the use of 1280 kHz to operate a satellite of CFSL (Weyburn) at Estevan.

1961

CJSL signed on the air in August, operating on 1280 kHz with a power of 1,000 watts. The SL in the calls were for owner Soo Line Broadcasting Co. Ltd. Soo Line also owned CFSL-AM at Weyburn (on air since 1957).

1968

John Deadlock was production and promotion manager.

1969

On March 18, Soo Line Broadcasting was given permission to move CJSL’s studios from 1235 4th Street to 5th Street.

1972

On July 24, a transfer of shares in Soo Line Broadcasting Ltd. was approved: from Beaver Investments Ltd. to James T. Laing and Tom G. Laing, from A. O. Graham to James T. Laing, and from J.W.W. Graham to Tom G. Laing.

1974

On July 11, James T. Laing was authorized to increase his ownership in Soo Line from 42 to 53% of the common shares with the transfer of 2/3 of those shares from J.H. Staveley, A.E.S. Warrington, Mrs. A.E.S. Warrington, J. William Mryglod and Joseph Mryglod to Laing.

1978

In 1977, CJSL 1280 applied to the CRTC to increase full-time power to 10,000 watts. The application was mutually exclusive with CHRB High River, Alberta, which wanted to operate on 1280 kHz. The CRTC gave the CJSL power increase approval in principle, but deferred a final decision pending agreement between the station and Regina’s CJME (1300 kHz). Future changes at CJME may require such an agreement. In 1978, CJSL’s power increase was granted because an agreement had been reached with CJME.

1979

CJSL increased power from 1,000 to 10,000 watts.

1986

David Gravelle became CJSL’s news director. He had held the same position with CIXX-FM in London. Matt Miller was the station’s new program director and morning man. Matt Bradley joined CJSL from CHLO in St. Thomas. He replaced Mike Nisbet who left for Sarnia. Matt Miller was program director. Peter Laubardias was sports director.

1987

Soo Line Broadcasting president Thomas G. Laing passed away September 3. He was 73. He founded CFSL in 1957 and CJSL in 1959. Laing served as president of both the Saskatchewan and Western Association of Broadcasters, and as director of the C.A.B. He was a prominent businessman in southern Saskatchewan, and from 1955 to 1966 served as an alderman and later, mayor of Weyburn.

1995

CJSL and CFSL (Weyburn) were sold by Soo Line Broadcasting Co. Ltd. to Frontier City Broadcasting Co. Ltd. (Golden West Broadcasting).
