On March 25, 2013 CTV announced that it had ordered The Social, a one-hour, daily Canadian talk series from Bell Media In-House Productions, for the  2013/14 broadcast season.

CTV said that the talk show would offer “…fresh perspective on pop culture and lifestyle topics through friendly debate and social media, email and text messaging”.

The series began broadcasting on Monday September 2nd and ran weekdays at 1 p.m.  following local news.

The Social co-hosts were Cynthia Loyst, Melissa Grelo, Traci Melchor, and Lainey Lui. The programs were produced before a live studio audience and were executive produced by Michelle Crespi.

On October 16th, 2013,  CTV and PPI Releasing announced that The Social was now being offered in syndication in the U.S. for broadcast in 2014.

On March 6th 2014, as co-host Melissa Grelo prepared to begin her maternity leave, The Social revealed some of the upcoming celebrity guest co-hosts who would fill in during her absence. They would include Jann Arden, Marilyn Denis, Wendy Crewson, Elisha Cuthbert Arlene Dickinson, Arielle Kebbel, Emily Procter Sarah Rafferty and Debbie Travis.

Cynthia Loyst, Lainey Lui and Traci Melchor would continue as co-hosts, with Loyst filling in as moderator during Grelo’s maternity leave.

On June 3rd 2015,  CTV announced an order for a third season of the series, to begin on August 31st.

In March 2016, CTV announced that Marci Ien, the former host of Canada AM, would be joining The Social as a co-host.  She would be replacing Traci Melchor, who after missing many weeks on the program had announced that she would be leaving the show to concentrate on looking after her health, as well as her reporting work on  Etalk.

It was no surprise when The Social was once again in the CTV schedule announced in May for the 2016-2017 season, with the same four co-hosts, and the series was back for a fifth season on September 5th 2017.  iIn the summer of 2018 it was announced that The Social would be returning for a sixth season on CTV.

On June 6th 2019 the Network confirmed that The Social would again be a part of the CTV schedule for the 2019-2010 season.
