The Cartoon Network

The Cartoon Network was launched as a specialty cartoon channel on July 4th 2012, and was wholly owned by Teletoon Canada Inc., a 50/50 partnership between Astral Media and Corus Entertainment.

In March 2013 Corus Entertainment announced that, subject to the successful conclusion of the latest application by Astral Media Inc for approval to sell all their broadcast assets to BCE Inc., Corus would acquire the other 50% of ownership of Teletoon Canada Inc., and thereby gain 100% control of the Cartoon Network.

On June 27, 2013, the CRTC approved the application by Astral Media Inc. to sell its pay and specialty television channels, conventional television stations and radio stations to BCE Inc., including Astral’s shared ownership in the Cartoon Network through its 50% position in Teletoon Canada Inc.

It was a condition of the approval that BCE must divest itself of ownership of several television and radio programming undertakings, including its 50% ownership of Teletoon Canada Inc. Pending eventual sale, the Commission directed BCE Inc. to transfer the interim management and control of its position in Teletoon Canada Inc. to a trustee pursuant to the terms of the voting trust agreement addressed in a letter of approval issued 27 June 2013, by no later than 29 July 2013.
