Theme and Variations

Network: CBC Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1981

Broadcast Medium: Television

Aired Sunday afternoons from April 19 to August 30, 1981.

This 3 hour program was produced in Toronto by John L. Kennedy. The
show had the freedom to broadcast a mix of movies, classical music and
documentaries that usually complemented each other. For instance, one
program combined Ingmar Bergman’s film production of The Magic Flute
with The Borodin Trio, with John Thorne’s production from CBC Vancouver,
with an ensemble that specialized in modern Russian music.

Another show featured Robert Duncan’s NFB documentary, Margaret
Laurence: First Lady Of Manawaka, and the CBC adaptation of her story A
Bird In The House, written by Patricia Watson and directed by Allan
King. Another program featured a documentary on Mary Pickford. For
another show, on the theme of creation, the series combined Nancy
Ryley’s CBC documentary on Emily Carr and Songs of a Sourdough, a film
on the life of Robert W. Service.
