U.S. producer Don Reid created a very successful game show called College Bowl, in which American universities competed against one another in a general knowledge quiz. Reid’s format had sufficient unique elements for him to be able to copyright them, in addition to the program title, and this copyright was extended to University Challenge, the title given to the College Bowl format when franchised to other countries.
Britain’s version of Challenge started in 1962 and ran through 1987. After a break of seven years, the series returned in 1994, and was still running in the early months of 2003. CTV’s version, on the other hand, generated little enthusiasm, and it only survived for one year, 1970/71, in its Sunday 5:00-5:30pm time period.
