Weather Network, The

A licence to operate a national weather network was granted to MétéoMédia in 1987, and the service was launched the following year. In 1993, the CRTC approved the transfer of control of MétéoMédia to Pelmorex Weather Network Ltd.

The Weather Network provided weather forecasts nationally 24 hours a day, with local forecasts every ten minutes, and the service reached 94% of Canadian cable and satellite subscribers.  The network also provided highway and road construction updates, and access to traffic cameras.

The Weather Network was designated by the CRTC for mandatory carriage on basic cable/satellite.

On January 25th, 2012, the CRTC extended the mandatory distribution of The Weather Network/Météomédia on the digital basic service from 31 August 2015 to 31 August 2018.

In 2013, The Weather Network launched regional feeds for Alberta and the Maritimes. Each feed featured regional forecasts, weather news stories, and traffic information (where available).

On December 8, 2014, The Weather Network and CBC News entered into a content-sharing partnership. The Weather Network produced national weather forecasts for CBC News Network and for The National. In turn, The Weather Network was able to use CBC News content on its service.

Pelmorex acquired The Weather Channel’s interest in The Weather Network in 2015.
